Your journey to Ajmer Sharif

A complete guide to your ziyarat

From choosing your journey to arriving at the Dargah: visiting hours, transport, accommodation, family preparation and a thoughtful approach to the sacred precinct.

Choosing your time and season

Incredible India publishes seasonal hours of 5 am–9 pm in winter and 4 am–10 pm in summer. Individual areas may follow arrangements connected with worship and local access. Published visiting hours.

Allow separately for arriving in Ajmer, reaching your accommodation, resting, visiting and returning. Avoid placing ziyarat immediately before a fixed train or flight. If attending a particular gathering matters to you, establish its current time and location rather than assuming a daily schedule.

Rajasthan Tourism recommends October–February for comfortable weather. In hotter weather, shorten exposed midday travel and leave more time for rest. Urs follows the lunar calendar, so its position in the Gregorian year changes. Official city and seasonal guidance.

Reaching Ajmer

By air

Kishangarh is the nearest airport, approximately 30 km from Ajmer. Compare the onward transfer, luggage allowance and waiting charges alongside the air fare. If landing in another city, plan that additional journey separately.

By rail or road

Ajmer lies on the Delhi–Jaipur–Marwar–Ahmedabad–Mumbai rail route; buses also connect Jaipur with Ajmer. Rajasthan Tourism transport information. Check that your chosen train stops at Ajmer and note the arrival date, particularly on an overnight journey.

For a hired vehicle, agree on passenger and luggage capacity, the exact destination, waiting time and return arrangements. Save your accommodation address and contact number offline as well as on paper.

Hospitality during your visit

For accommodation, meals and a personal welcome in Ajmer, meet your hosts at Ajmer Sharif and contact Peer Syed Bashir Ahmed Chishty Niazi to discuss your stay.

Accommodation and a realistic budget

Choose accommodation using the actual walking route, stairs, lift access, bathroom facilities and opportunities to rest—not distance alone. With older relatives, easy access and a quiet room may matter more than being closest. Confirm the total price, additional bedding, check-in time and cancellation terms before booking.

Separate your budget into travel, rooms, meals, local transport and any voluntary offering. An old quote may not apply during Urs. When someone arranges a service, keep a record of their name, what is included and the agreed amount. This website does not make hotel or travel reservations.

Preparing with family and mobility needs

These are practical suggestions, rather than an official list of shrine rules. Follow instructions at the site about clothing, head covering, footwear storage, bags and photography. Light luggage and easily managed footwear can simplify your arrival.

  • Give each child an accompanying adult and accessible guardian contact details.
  • Agree on a meeting point away from passageways, including what to do if a phone battery runs out.
  • Plan pauses, seating and return transport for older companions.
  • If using a wheelchair or other assistance, ask specifically about steps, the entrance route, help available and access to the area you wish to visit. Do not assume the whole complex is step-free.
  • International visitors should keep travel documents, their accommodation address and an alternative way to contact companions readily available.

Arriving respectfully

On a first visit, take a moment to understand the setting and worship taking place. Arrange footwear and head covering as instructed, then move with consideration for other visitors. Keep voices and phone use discreet where people are praying or reciting.

Allow the experience to unfold without rushing to photograph it. Ask about permission before photographing people or sacred interiors. If uncertain about seating, passing through a gathering or presenting an offering, request guidance courteously.

Read the offerings guide before arranging flowers or a chadar. The Dargah history introduces its architecture. Leave space in your visit for prayer, silence and the needs of those beside you.

A calm visit: a suggested sequence

This is a flexible planning example, not a ritual timetable. Arrive in the city, leave your luggage, rest and establish the current approach. Set aside a visit without a tight appointment immediately afterwards, followed by time to eat and recover.

If staying longer, keep additional sightseeing as a separate part of the day. Fitting too many places into a short visit can be demanding for children and older relatives. Before departure, check luggage collection, your vehicle and the time needed to reach the station or airport.
