The search for a guide

Traditional biographies place his origins in twelfth-century Sistan. They describe journeys through Bukhara and Samarkand and his association with Khwaja Usman Haruni near Nishapur. Much of this early-life narrative reaches us through devotional histories written after his lifetime.

Ajmer and the Chishti tradition

The Chishti order takes its name from Chisht, east of Herat, and predates Khwaja Sahib. He holds a foundational place in its Indian history. Accounts differ about the year he arrived in Ajmer; his association with the city and his passing there in 1236 remain central to his legacy.

The National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities identifies Khwaja Qutbuddin Bakhtiyar Kaki (RA) as his disciple and spiritual successor. Kaki’s shrine in Mehrauli, Delhi, recalls this relationship. Such connections link individual teachers and places within a wider history of spiritual fellowship.
